Ideally Positioned Knights on the Board
Knights, aside from being the most uniquely shaped among the chess pieces, also have the most unique movements and roles on the board. They're ideally positioned on both sides of our initial formation to primarily protect the lateral extremes of our kingdom. However, knight position on the board is also such that they can easily maneuver to the center of the board.
Two knights are tactically placed in the original formation. One is on the king's side and the other on the queen's side. Usually, the knight on the king's side is for defense purposes and the other one supports the queen in its daring assault and ambushes on enemy territory. Due to their ideal locations—grouped with bishops which are also assault pieces—they can easily scramble to form a lightning-fast assault team, together or individually, since they have the ability to jump over any piece.
Knights are placed immediately to the side of rooks in the preliminary formation of the game. When referring to the chess board coordinates white knights occupy B-1 and G-1 on the board and black knights B-8 and G-8. Right next to them are the bishops. The king and queen can easily summon knights to take a bold do-or-die stand in front of them by merely making an "L" shaped move; one square forward and 2 squares left or right to the king or queen.
They can also quickly swing to the rescue of the rooks at the extreme sides of the original formation whenever a threat looms to these areas. Thus, the knights are ideally and strategically located for easy deployment anywhere on the board. They are often in demand when defending the king inside their territory or in assaulting enemy territory. They often see combat from their camp to the enemy's camp and usually number among the casualties.
The knight position on the board, being a mere maneuver to a square close to rank 4 row, allows the knight to move cautiously to the center of the board; not too committed, allowing for a quick withdrawal, and not too timid as to stay too far from the action. Together with bishops they can easily guard the center of the board and also launch quick attacks from there to the enemy territory.
If we have learned the key to successful knight maneuvers, individually or in pair, we can unleash the dreadful powers of our knights right at the beginning. It's worth knowing the value of knight position on the board.
