The Significance of an Initial Pawn Formation

Pawns are often misunderstood as either mere obstructions or burdens in the game. They "block" the effectiveness of the major pieces in the beginning. Hence, novices get rid of them by sacrificing as many of them early on in the game. But we can glean the vital roles they play from the initial pawn positioning on the board.

Pawns are important. This can not be overemphasized. This is why they are arrayed in a proud horizontal formation at the outset, manning the frontlines before the heat of the battle as the primary guardians not just of the king but of all higher pieces. Each player is initially provided 8 pawns each. After having set up the board properly the pawns are to be set up on it by lining them up on the second row of each player's camp.

For white pieces the initial station of pawns, according to the board coordinates, is along rank 2. Black pawns should be lined up along rank 7. Ranks 1 and 8 are reserved for officials or higher ranking pieces like the king, queen, bishops, knights, and rooks of each player. With this initial formation we see at once who are likely to be sent ahead to size up the strength of the enemy.

Most of the time the first few moves in chess involve pawn pieces. By the way they are advanced and positioned at the outset we may gain some hints of the player's play skill. Pawn positioning reveals a lot from the players that move them and react to them. Players may opt to move them in teams of more than 2 pieces or in pairs. Either way, we have to put them in a defense structure.

One reason they are in the frontlines is to win the race to the last row. Aside from blocking, sacrificing, and checking tasks, pawns are also looked upon to manage a touch-down on the last row at all costs for conversion.

For white pawns the last row is rank 8. For black pawns it is rank 1. Conversion is when pawns turn into a queen or any major piece. Conversion success all depends on the way our pawns are initially structured and strategically advanced.

Thus, bear in mind that as many pawns should be converted. And we already have a bonus right at the start; they are positioned ahead of our other pieces because they have to run and win a risky race. Winning, in many ways, depends on initial pawn positioning.
